DuroMaxx® SRPE Advances in Nationwide Acceptance
We’re excited that DuroMaxx® Steel Reinforced Polyethylene (SRPE) has been accepted for use by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). DuroMaxx is now an approved material type for drainage and culverts applications that can be considered on DOT projects all across the state of Georgia! DuroMaxx has continued to gain traction nationwide as DOTs evaluate the quality of its structural components and see the in-field performance results of this innovative product.
The process to get DuroMaxx® SRPE accepted by GDOT as an approved material type for culvert and drainage applications was a multi-step process that began nearly 10 years ago. Through GDOT’s rigorous material selection process, which includes committee review and discussion for all pipe and conduit materials, it was determined that DuroMaxx SRPE was eligible to participate in the New Product Evaluation process and eventually qualified for approval. Throughout the process, Contech supplied supporting material for the early qualification, which included submitting 3rd party approvals (including AASHTO, AREMA and the FAA), product literature, in state test site data and installation instructions to GDOT. In addition, we were able to provide other DOT specifications from around the country, including FDOT, for examples of what other DOTs are doing with SRPE.
DuroMaxx® SRPE is a unique and amazing product that provides the lightweight, low-cost structural advantages of traditional HDPE with none of the disadvantages. The built-in capacity of the steel reinforced ribs ensures the pipe will not creep or buckle. DuroMaxx can be twice as stiff as non-steel reinforced HDPE pipe, as it is more resistant to the effect of temperature and sunlight. The high strength fully encapsulated 80 ksi steel ribs allow DuroMaxx® to be manufactured in diameters ranging from 30-inch all the way up to 120-inch in size.
GDOT approved DuroMaxx® SRPE because it is a cost-effective and durable solution for a variety of pipe and conduit applications. SRPE is highly corrosion-resistant and offers superior strength-to-weight ratio, making it ideal for culvert, drainage, sanitary sewer, and large tank applications. It is also easy to install, which reduces project costs and time. Finally, SRPE is environmentally friendly and recyclable, making it an attractive option for many construction projects. As DOTs continue to look for alternatives to traditional drainage materials to speed up construction times and improve on project costs, DuroMaxx is positioned to gain even more approvals around the country.
